There was an interesting article recently on CNN Money about people sharing information on their medical conditions. Tweet your chart: Why social sharing of medical data is a good idea - Fortune Tech*
This information sharing is consistent with the federal government’s and NCG’s goals of empowering patients with their medical information. One of the biggest drivers of the governments push for Electronic Health Record’s (EHR’s) is to empower patient’s with their medical information. Note item #14 of the meaningful use requirements: http://www.informationweek.com/news/healthcare/policy/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=225900180
The challenge is that all the medical information is still stored in your doctor’s paper medical chart and even if they are using an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) there is no way to share the information with other systems or individuals (patients or other healthcare providers). That is the difference between an EMR and an EHR. An EHR has the connectivity and standardization built in to its architecture.
EHR is what the government wants and, more importantly it is what the public wants.
